DPAC is excited to continue the celebration of high school musical theater with our Regional Awards Program, Triangle Rising Stars (TRS). The program focuses attention on the meaningful work being done both on and off stage by dedicated teachers and students.

The 2023 Triangle Rising Stars Awards will be held at DPAC on Thursday, May 18, 2023. This evening event will celebrate high school musical theater achievements made throughout the Triangle and surrounding areas, and will feature 20 top student finalists. You can look forward to special appearances from last year’s TRS winners Symoné Spencer and Joshua Thompson, who will both be performing and helping us announce the Best Actress and Actor who will go on to compete nationally at The Jimmy Awards. Hosted by Clay Aiken, and adjudicated live by a panel of esteemed judges, this event is not one to miss.

IMPORTANT CHANGES THIS YEAR

Triangle Rising Stars is returning to the traditional model of adjudication. This means that students may no longer apply separately from their high school musical production, and they must apply with the Qualifying Role that they are cast in by their high school musical theater teacher/Director. The past two years allowed for a different application process due to pandemic related impacts on high schools across the country. Because most schools are running at 100% and will be producing musicals again this school year, the National level has determined it best to return to the original program design.

Opportunity for Additional Student Involvement

Two nominees from EVERY participating school will be invited to perform in the opening number Triangle Rising Stars Awards on DPAC’s stage. Each participating school will receive an email in the spring asking which two students will be selected to participate. Rehearsals for this number are mandatory, and any students selected must be available to attend.  Only two representatives from each school will be invited; if your school is submitting more than one musical this year, you will not be eligible to submit additional students. This opportunity is for each participating school, not each participating musical. It is up to each school to determine how these students are selected.

Student Stage Managers

Triangle Rising Stars will be selecting two students to serve as Stage Managers this year. Those interested in applying for this special opportunity must be available for every rehearsal, tech and the performance. To apply, student stage managers should send their resume, cover letter and references to trianglerisingstars@dpacnc.com. Deadline for applications is April 7, 2023.

More information can be found in the Triangle Rising Stars handbook.
